Penn Alps Restaurant and Craft Shop is a haven for the hungry man or woman, or their littler ones. About a 20-minute drive west on Interstate 68 in Grantsville, the facility offers a buffet with simple, hearty fare in a large, lovely and homey setting.
On a mid-January visit, the warm ambience and tasty food was welcome. For $22 a person and some change, the patron gets their choice to choose from staples like homemade macaroni and cheese, fried chicken, broiled fish, green beans and more. Along with a good choice of deserts, garden salad bar, as well as a few ice cream selections, Penn Alps offers a special escape from the cold mountain winter.
The mac and cheese was the stand out on this visit. Anyone who has been eating the entre from a box will find Penn Alps version to be a welcome blast of real cheese and macaroni–not exquisite, but the cheese was not runny and the macaroni was of the larger variety.
The fried chicken wasn’t a standout, but it wasn’t anything to pass over either–crispy but not dry. The green beans were great, the mashed potatoes were good–Altogether the Penn Alps buffet is notable for an authentic simple food that will stick to your ribs.
The setting, the ambience did stand out. Large area seating at wooden tables in well lit, pleasantly decorated rooms, and with a warm fireplace to boot! Just the place to act as an oasis from the cold, often gray overcast days this winter has given us .
Service was solid. The server came to the table multiple times to refill the water carafe, or check on us. It was friendly service, but not intrusive.
Final Grade: B+
