It took the better part of an hour for some fair-goers to wind their vehicles down the long stream of revelers going to the parking lot the night of July 24. When they got there, practically every fair food stand was host to long, slow-moving lines. But some things may be worth waiting for: deep fried pickles, hot sausage sandwiches, icy sno balls and powdered funnel cake…the list goes on.

The highlight of Fridays show may have been the unique, synchronous aerial drone light show, which had a theme very localized to this region. It featured miners mining, kayakers, cyclists, fisherman, the Appalachian Mountains outline, race cars, emergency workers, and recognition of the 250th anniversary of American independence.

It was followed up by a lower-altitude, small-charge, but extremely intense, rich fireworks display that seemed to take folks by surprise after the dazzling drone displays. The fireworks were capped off by a couple of well-engineered ground explosions and a grand finale burst, that might have had Walker Texas Ranger, Chuck Norris smiling from heaven.

Parting the festivities was sweet sorrow, but thankfully exiting the fair was much more rapid than getting there. With a strong turnout that evening, more than one visitor may have been wondering what might come to the fairgrounds when American freedom turn 250 plus one, in 2027. No doubt, more deep-fried deliciousness to fill the belly and delirious displays to take us away from our everyday dilemmas for a few hours.
